Trafalgar square also consists of a lot of sculptures and two fountains by Sir Edwin Lutyens, added in 1939. The square is surrounded by many awesome buildings. On the north side is the neo-classical National Gallery, built between 1834 and 1838. Trafalgar Square was designed by John Nash during the 1820s and constructed in the 1830s is both a holidaymaker attraction along with the main focus for political demonstrations. Trafalgar Square itself has a number of interesting sights including: Nelson's Column, The National Gallery, and St. Martin-in-the-Fields. You can view these and more on this short walking tour. It houses an accumulation of more than 2300 paintings, which includes works by van Gogh, Renoir, Leonardo da Vinci and Claude Monet. On the east side the square is bordered by the Canada House, completed in 1827. Opposite the Canada House is the South Africa House, which started out in 1933.
On the north side of the square you can travel to the National Gallery as well as just nearby on St. Martin's Lane is the National Portrait Gallery. Both have both long term displays as well as special displays so check what's on prior to going.
